Does the story stop there? Not exactly. I actually feel that it is necessary to discuss the competitor watches from the outset because I don't think any of them are currently a perfect blend of features and wearability. The rest of the space connections are a bit more esoteric – the gold tones used for the sword handset and wedge-like applied indices reference the gold foil covering much of the JAXA HTV-X's outer hull, while the deep, almost iridescent blue used for the sloping azurage outer chapter ring pays homage to the look of its solar panels. It's a colorway that works well and adds some needed drama to the Attesa formula even without the astronomical connection, but it's Citizen's use of finishing that truly pushes this dial to the next level. Rather than a hindrance to creativity, the clear light-diffusing layer that aids the brand's light-gathering Eco-Drive system is a canvas for new textures. This allows Citizen to do what no brand working with real aventurine (to my knowledge) has achieved – adding layers and texture to this sparkling nocturnal look. The clear, raised minutes scale ring adds both gloss and azurage segments while allowing the glittering starscape below to shine through, and provides contrast to the semigloss main dial layer. Likewise, the two main subdials provide raised black azurage accent rings, along with subtle sunburst finishes of their own. The 9 o'clock subdial is perhaps the most impressive, though. This minimalist display adds a wealth of implied depth with a clear azurage half-ring running along the 9 o'clock side, as well as a simple groove in between this ring and the center of the subdial.
